Title IX Compliance — Notice of Non-Discrimination
Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 is a federal law that prohibits sex discrimination. It reads in part:
“No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”
–Legal Citation: Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, and its implementing regulation at 34 C.F.R. Part 106 (Title IX)
Sex discrimination includes sexual harassment and sexual assault. This Office administers the University System of Georgia Board of Regents’ Sexual Misconduct Policy. Refer to section 4.1.7.
Title IX prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in education programs or activities operated by recipients of Federal financial assistance. Georgia Southern University does not discriminate on the basis of sex, race, color, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, religion, age, veteran status, political affiliation, or disability.
While it is often thought of as a law that applies to athletics programs, Title IX is much broader than athletics and applies to many programs at Georgia Southern University. While compliance with the law is everyone’s responsibility at Georgia Southern, you a can find a list of staff members here who have primary responsibility for Title IX compliance.
