Russell Keen, Vice President for Government Relations and Community Engagement
As Vice President for Government Relations and Community Engagement, Russell Keen serves as part of the President’s Cabinet. He works with the President along with internal and external stakeholders to favorably position Georgia Southern University among all levels of government and civic engagement. Russell focuses his efforts on opportunities to secure public support and resources from local, state, and federal entities. He also works with community partners and non-profit organizations to promote Georgia Southern as a student centered university that emphasizes academic excellence, research activity, economic development and community engagement.
Russell graduated from Georgia Southern University in 1999 with a Bachelors of Business Administration degree in Finance and was President of the University’s Student Government Association in 1998. He is currently working on achieving “double eagle” status by completing the M.Ed in Higher Education Administration.
Prior to becoming Georgia Southern University’s Vice President of Government Relations and Community Engagement, his career began in the banking industry where he worked as a Mortgage Banker for First Banking Company of Southeast Georgia and BB&T Banking Corporation. In 2001, he began working for Georgia Southern University as the Director for Annual Giving and has also served the university as the Atlanta Regional Development Director and Associate Vice President for Governmental Relations. Russell developed additional fundraising experience working at the University of Georgia’s Franklin College of Arts and Sciences and SafePath Children’s Advocacy Center.
Russell’s recent community engagement activities include serving as the non-public appointee to the Coastal Regional Commission and serving as Chairman of the Government Affairs Committee for the Statesboro-Bulloch Chamber of Commerce. He is an alumnus of the 2012 Class of Leadership Georgia, the 2009 Class of Leadership Bulloch and the Georgia Academy of Economic Development. Russell currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Rotary Club of Statesboro as the organization’s Foundation Director and participates on the Georgia Chamber’s Governmental Affairs Council.
Russell and Karen, his wife, have two children and live in Statesboro, Georgia.
Suzanne Tatum, Assistant to the Vice President for Government Relations and Community Engagement
Suzanne Tatum graduated from the University of Colorado, with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She began her career in New York City, working at CBS News in the News Operations Division. After three years in New York, Mrs. Tatum moved to Georgia and began working at Statesboro Herald/Morris Multimedia in print sales. She was then promoted to Online Marketing Director and host of Studio Statesboro, a daily online news show. She began working at Georgia Southern University in the Marketing Department in 2009. She moved into her current role, Assistant to the Vice President for Government Relations and Community Engagement, in May of 2013. Mrs. Tatum is a 2013 graduate of the Protocol School of Washington’s Protocol Officer Training and she represents Georgia Southern University in the Protocol and Diplomacy International Protocol Officers Association (PDI-POA). She currently serves on the Statesboro-Bulloch Chamber of Commerce Government Operations Committee and Professional Women of Statesboro. Additionally, Mrs. Tatum is a 2009 graduate of Leadership Bulloch and a 2010 graduate of the Eagle Leadership Academy. She currently serves on the Georgia Southern University Staff Council. She is also an active member of Statesboro First United Methodist Church. Suzanne and her husband, Bryant, reside in Statesboro with their two children.
