A May message from President Marrero

May 5, 2022

Dear Colleagues,

This is the time of year that we celebrate the accomplishments of our graduating students conferring approximately 4,300 degrees across five ceremonies, totaling more than 5,700 degrees conferred at the completion of this academic year.

There are so many stories of perseverance and determination as our students achieve this milestone of success.  What I also know is that our faculty and staff – who remained dedicated each day to ensuring student success – play an important role in this accomplishment.  You see, people have impact on other people!  That is the distinctive of Georgia Southern University…caring, dedicated faculty and staff nurturing and developing the talent of extraordinary, talented, and diverse students.

We celebrated our faculty, staff, and teams at the University Awards of Excellence last month with 15 individual awards, 1 team award and honored 463 employees for their years of service – including Patricia McCubbins’ 45 years of service!

We honored distinguished alumni at our Annual Alumni Association Awards dinner giving Mr. Anthony Tippins the Talon Award, our most distinguished honor, 12 hours before breaking ground on the Anthony P. Tippins Indoor Practice Facility.

Later that day, we dedicated the National Panhellenic Council Garden with hundreds of our NPHC students and alumni.

I finished the day by attending the beginning of the Eagle Football Alumni Association Raffle and experiencing the incredible talents and energy of our Gretsch School of Music students in our Opera Program production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Pirates of Penzance.”

What a delightful and fulfilling 36 hours!!!

I tell you all of this for you to know how vibrant your university is.  Next week we celebrate the success of our students and ultimate outcome of our vision…growing ourselves to grow others!  It’s embedded in our values and our culture… it’s why students continue to choose Georgia Southern, it’s why our alumni are so passionate about Eagle Nation, and it’s why we continue to achieve milestones of success, together.  It always starts with our people!

Sincerely,
Kyle
