A message from President Marrero

August 2, 2022

Dear Colleagues,

It is the first week of August and we are all in preparation mode for the start of a new academic year! I wanted to take a minute and welcome our new and returning faculty and staff to the Georgia Southern family and provide updates on a few important topics.

Throughout the summer we continued to meet regularly with Faculty Senate Executive Committee and Staff Council, updating them on our transitional COVID-19 protocols and processes.  Georgia Southern will be fully open and fully engaged in all regularly scheduled activities this fall. We will continue to provide free testing and vaccines to our faculty, staff and students on the Statesboro and Armstrong campuses. And, we will continue to provide the University’s online Health Reporting Form (formerly CARES Notification) located within the MyGS portal for COVID isolation and quarantine notification processing. Any other illnesses should follow university processes for notification. We will keep you updated on communications from the Georgia Department of Public Health and the University System of Georgia on any additional guidance on covid or other identified public health concerns.

Believe it or not, it is time to plan for next year’s budget (FY24). Some divisions have already begun their budget prioritization process, and all others will start this month in their department/unit prioritization that invites involvement at all levels of our institution. You will be hearing from your divisional leadership on the specifics as we develop, and take part in, our annual budget prioritization process. Our goal is to clearly communicate how and why strategic budget decisions are made and the timeline for the budget process.

This will be a challenging year as we assess the budgetary impact of the predicted enrollment decline due to the competitive employment sector, college readiness post-COVID, and changes in admission criteria. What I do know is that we have prepared well and will navigate these challenges in the same manner we always do – supporting each other, informing each other, and fulfilling our mission of student success!

Students will start moving in this weekend as our communities become more and more activated. Given our early start of classes on August 10, students will be admitted throughout the first week of classes. Together, we will welcome these students and provide them the support they need to be successful at Georgia Southern. Thank you for your continued dedication, flexibility, and commitment to our mission. We are indeed fortunate to work in an environment that truly impacts the lives of others!

Sincerely,
Kyle
