President’s December Message to Campus

Dec. 1, 2022

Dear Colleagues,

Here we are on December 1 with the fall semester coming quickly to a close. Final exams begin today and preparations are underway for commencement ceremonies December 10 (Savannah) and December 13 (Statesboro). I’m so proud to say that we will confer more than  2,100 degrees – baccalaureate, masters, doctoral, and certificates – across our campuses this fall and will graduate students with valuable skills and unique talents who will make a great impact in their communities.

Commencement is the ceremonious celebration of our students’ achievements, and it represents the culmination of our collective efforts in service to these students. This time of excitement also presents an opportunity for us to reflect upon our work and remember that we truly are transforming lives through education. Thank you for being such an important and integral part of that mission and ultimately our students’ success!

What an incredible victory over App State last Saturday night! It was truly an epic game with one of the most dramatic endings…and thankfully a win that now makes us bowl eligible. We will find out this coming Sunday what bowl the team will be playing in, but needless to say it is a great accomplishment for our student-athletes, coaching staff, and institution – Go Eagles!

I always like to highlight the incredible work of our faculty in furthering our public impact mission. Dr. Jessica Schwind, and her work with our new Institute for Health Logistics & Analytics, has landed one of the largest contracts in our institution’s history with a $15.7 million partnership with the Georgia Department of Public Health to manage COVID-19 mitigation efforts in Georgia’s K-12 schools to help keep schools operating safely.

Georgia Southern is now the third university in the state of Georgia to be designated an Innovation and Economic Prosperity (EIP) University by the Association of Public Land-grant Universities (APLU)! This national designation recognizes public research universities working with public and private sector partners in their states and regions to support economic development through a variety of activities, including innovation and entrepreneurship, technology transfer, talent and workforce development, and community development.

During this season of celebration, accomplishment, and thankfulness, let’s continue to care for each other and for our communities. From me and my family (Jane and Lily), we wish everyone a wonderful holiday break and our hope for each of you is that this season is filled with family, friends, laughter, and joy!

Sincerely,
Kyle
