June 6, 2023 – Soaring into Summer…

June 6, 2023

Dear Colleagues,

As we soar into summer, we are busy as ever with what could be a record-setting summer enrollment!

Summer classes began a few weeks ago with A term, where I had the great pleasure of meeting with more than 60 students and faculty in Wexford, Ireland. I was there to finalize the architectural contract for student housing just a few blocks from our Wexford Learning Center, further economic development opportunities with World Trade Center Savannah (TradeBridge), and, most importantly, hear the research project presentations our students will be undertaking during their study abroad experience. In addition, we explored research opportunities with South East Technological University, and subsequently hosted their leadership team last week here in Georgia. As the only public university in Ireland, we have immense opportunities to enhance our student experiences and further Georgia Southern’s global impact.

June will continue to be a busy month as we welcome incoming students and their parents on campus for SOAR, our student orientation program. These visits are critical engagements as we welcome, help onboard, register and familiarize our new incoming students to the upcoming fall semester. Each interaction and support provided by our faculty, staff, and departments serve to reinforce the decision these students have made to join Eagle Nation.

I have the pleasure of being a part of these sessions during the welcome, where I can witness the excitement in the eyes of both students and parents during this important transition time in their lives. It is truly inspiring. The dedication and care exhibited by our faculty and staff during these final visits leave a lasting impression and instill a sense of loyalty and pride that comes with joining Eagle Nation and learning what it means to be “True Blue.”

Also this month, we will welcome more than 700 Governors Honors Program students and faculty to the Statesboro Campus. Program faculty and staff move in during the week of June 12, and the program officially begins with student arrival and orientation on June 18. These are truly among the state’s brightest high school students. As you see them on campus over the next month and a half, please extend a warm smile and hello! Should you have any questions regarding GHP, please email ghp@georgiasouthern.edu or call the University Events office at 912-478-6737.

Finally, I want to highlight and celebrate the accomplishment of one of our faculty members, Dr. Yelena Tarasenko. Dr. Tarasenko has just been awarded a prestigious Fulbright Scholar Award. Dr. Tarasenko is a professor in the Department of Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Environmental Health Sciences at Georgia Southern’s Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health. She will be collaborating with personnel and students at the Faculty of Medicine and Institute of Clinical and Preventive Medicine at the University of Latvia, as well as colleagues at the International Agency for Research on Cancer to help improve cancer care coordination and screening in Latvia and 14 European countries participating in the “Towards gastric cancer screening implementation in the European Union” project.

Thank you for your continued dedication and the remarkable impact you make on our students.

Keep soaring Eagle nation!

Sincerely,

Kyle
