A March message from President Marrero

March 8, 2022

Dear Colleagues,

We are now well into March and believe it or not, next week is spring break for our students!  Thankfully, all signs are indicating relief on the Covid-19 front. Please continue to take advantage of free testing and vaccines available on the Statesboro and Armstrong campuses.  Just to give you some overall numbers…since we started providing vaccines on our campuses, we have given over 12,000 shots in arms.  Thank you to all who have spent countless hours on our immense vaccination effort and all who continue to work on our notification teams and testing centers.  Don’t forget to take advantage of our incentive program and get “Boosted Before Break!”

As temperatures soar into the 80s, it also signals time for our Spring sports – baseball, softball, tennis, golf, and track and field.  This week is particularly exciting as we host UGA in baseball Wednesday night at home and next week, we will host the annual Schenkel Invitational golf tournament!  Please continue to support our student-athletes as both women’s tennis and men’s golf defend their Sun Belt Conference titles from last year – and you’ll love the excitement of watching our teams and student athletes compete.  And, congratulations to our Rifle Team claiming the 2022 Southern Conference Rifle title!

I also encourage you attend our many incredible Gretsch School of Music concerts and productions.  I was fortunate to attend our Spring Choral Concert last Friday night at Carter Recital Hall.  It was a magical evening that reminded me how much I have missed live performances and how talented our students are – having been trained, coached, and taught by our dedicated and talented faculty and staff.  Let’s all find time to support our students by attending their events, concerts, and games!

Legislative session continues as the FY2022 Amended Budget nears the final stages of passage and as the Legislature considers the FY2023 Budget.  We will continue to monitor and update campus specifically on the proposed salary supplement for FY2022 and the FY2023 permanent cost of living salary increases along with our other legislative priorities.  Again, we are grateful for the support of our governor and legislative delegation.

Hopefully, you have all received the link inviting you to complete the Employee Engagement Survey.  Remember, the purpose of the survey is to gain input from all employees about your work environment, what is working well and where there may be opportunities for improvement.  The survey will remain open until close of business on March 14.  Your participation is critical in helping us create and improve our work environment.  We will be rolling out the institutional results on Thursday, April 7, via Zoom. Watch your email for additional details, including time and Zoom link.

As we progress through the remainder of the semester, I hope you will take time to enjoy the beautiful spring weather by taking a stroll around Sweetheart Circle, experiencing the landscape of the Arboretum, watching a game, attending a concert, playing disc golf, or checking out one of our many trails.  Re-engage with our communities and know that the future is bright at Georgia Southern!

Sincerely,
Kyle
