2020-2024 Inclusive Excellence Action Plan

Dear Georgia Southern University Family and Friends, 

As we know, the composition of our students, faculty and staff continues to diversify, both in ways that are apparent and in subtle ways that are not as noticeable. Mirroring the nation and our state, we know that this diversification of our learning community will continue to grow. Given historical inequities that exist in our nation and in higher education, this changing demographic requires us to advance our individual, programmatic and systemic support systems to assure the success of every member of our family. Complex issues of diversity, equity and inclusion require commitment to continuous learning, personal vulnerability and introspection, openness to others, and dedication to thinking about our work purposefully. 

As we embark on this work, it is important to begin with a clear and concise definition. Inclusive Excellence is the recognition that an organization’s success is dependent on, and tied directly to, how well it values, engages and includes the rich diversity of its community members, including its students, faculty, staff, alumni, friends and affiliates. 

The development and implementation of our Inclusive Excellence Action Plan is the next key step toward the realization of Georgia Southern’s vision to become a national model for Inclusive Excellence. The plan represents a roadmap to advance Inclusive Excellence by leveraging existing successful initiatives and embracing new innovative ideas while ensuring measurable success and accountability. 

The Inclusive Excellence Action Plan is organized around four goals, calling on our learning community to: 

  1. Create an equitable and inclusive environment for all. 
  2. Increase the representation of diverse students, faculty, staff and community partners at all levels of the University. 
  3. Facilitate access to achievement, success and recognition for underrepresented students, faculty, staff and alumni. 
  4. Implement strong, genuine, and consistently communicated culturally inclusive practices that reinforce the strategic plan and the Inclusive Excellence Action Plan. Meeting our goals requires each of us to be actively engaged change agents. 

These goals are ambitious, but attainable. Success will require significant collaboration and partnership. Progress will require new and reimagined systems, policies, practices and institutional norms to ensure accountability as our work advances. We will use quantitative and qualitative action items to measure success. Finally, we will transparently communicate our process and accomplishments to the Georgia Southern University community and the public. 

Collectively, we will continue to move the university forward with accountability and measurable change. I am committed to this work alongside you, and I am excited to see Georgia Southern’s future as an increasingly inclusive campus community. In closing, I want to extend my sincere appreciation for all the hard work and dedication of Georgia Southern University students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members for moving the university forward with respect to this critical work.
