Maura C. Copeland
Executive Counsel
Maura Copeland was named Associate Vice President for Legal Affairs in April 2011. Prior to her current position, she had served as Associate University Attorney since 2007. Earlier in her career, she served as a law clerk in the Bucks County, Pennsylvania Court of Common Pleas and the State Court of Hall County, Georgia. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Furman University and earned her Juris Doctor from Mercer University School of Law and a LL.M. in Taxation from Villanova University School of Law.
Geoffrey V. Carson
Associate University Attorney
Geoffrey Carson is a 2001 graduate of Davidson College in Davidson, NC, and he earned his Juris Doctor, cum laude, from the University of Georgia School of Law in Athens, GA in 2006. He joined Georgia Southern University staff as Associate University Attorney in September 2011, prior to which Mr. Carson was a general practice litigator in southeast Georgia.
Laura H. Wheaton
Associate University Attorney
Laura Wheaton graduated from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, FL, with a degree in Humanities and Sociology. She earned a Master of Arts in Sociology and a Juris Doctor from the University of Georgia in Athens, GA . She served as a law clerk for the Hon. John F. Nangle of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Georgia. After fifteen years in general private practice, she joined Georgia Southern University staff as Associate University Attorney in June 2019.
Jarvis Steele
Assistant University Counsel / Title IX Investigator
Jarvis Steele is a 2019 graduate of Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, GA, and he earned his Juris Doctor, from the University of Georgia School of Law in Athens, GA in 2022. He joined Georgia Southern University staff as Assistant University Counsel in August 2022, and serves in the dual role of Assistant University Counsel and Title IX Investigator.
Teresa L. Tatmon-Letbetter
Legal Assistant
Teresa Tatmon-Letbetter provides administrative support to the Office of Legal Affairs on all 3 campuses of Georgia Southern University.
