  • Penn State Chemical Engineering REU – Students participating in the program will engage in a wide range of chemical engineering research projects that integrate biology and materials science and will participate in weekly group activities. These activities provide an overview of current biomaterials technologies and expose students to the research challenges in each area. Students will have the opportunity to develop skills that will aid in key research contributions and will allow them to gain a deeper understanding of research processes and biomaterial technologies. Students will be challenged to utilize their skills and knowledge to develop new solutions for the betterment of human health, the environment, and society.Deadline: February 15
  • UA Computer Engineering REU – Students will fly through Atlanta, GA to travel together as a group to Ecuador. This will provide an opportunity for the participants to meet the faculty chaperone, meet each other, participate in ice-breaker activities, be introduced to the REU summer schedule, and discuss the next steps in their international travel. From Atlanta, the group will fly to Manta, Ecuador after which we will travel by bus to Bahia. Once in Bahia, the group stay at the RFI organized housing accommodations. While the official language of Ecuador is Spanish, the RFI organizers coordinate all necessary activities in English and provide translation services where necessary for their workshops. Workshops focus on social and environmental enterprise models, ethical entrepreneurship, viability of large scale bamboo production, sustainable international development, and political/social/cultural/economic analysis of post disaster zones.(currently closed)
  • Integrated Academia-Industry REU in Smart Structure Technologies- Participants are expected to spend a total of 10 weeks in the program. During the first weeks you will be trained at San Francisco State University or the University of South Carolina. Then, you will have the opportunity to participate in a collaborative research project between academia and industry. Formal training, workshops, technical tours and local cultural activities will also be part of the program. Support for the program is provided by the National Science Foundation. This includes a stipend of $5,000 and supports to travel to the program and to a domestic conference to present the research findings. Housing will be provided by the hosting institution.(currently closed)
  • UF Engineering for Healthcare REU – The REU Site Engineering for Healthcare will involve a diverse cohort of students in convergent research and curricula focused on critical engineering challenges in healthcare. REU Participants will (i) engage in high-impact research in partnership with engineering faculty and graduate student mentors, (ii) attend workshops dedicated to research practices and communications training, (iii) attend a seminar series where important high-priority challenges in healthcare that require engineering solutions are elucidated through partnerships with clinical faculty or healthcare professionals, and (iv) disseminate their research results through both oral and written communications. Via this REU Site, each participant will gain foundational skills through training workshops on the scientific method, and via hands-on research activities. REU Participants will gain an awareness of how traditional engineering principles can be extended to address modern engineering problems in the healthcare field and in society. Finally, REU Participants will improve their oral and written communication skills through symposium-style presentations and written project reports. Because of this training, REU Participants will be better prepared to succeed in their current undergraduate curriculum and be better prepared to make a positive impact upon entering industry or graduate school. A diverse cohort of participants will be recruited for this REU Site, including students that attend universities with limited research opportunities and students that may not have previously considered research-oriented careers.Deadline: February 1
  • Florida Atlantic University Renewable Energy REU – Ocean currents off the Southeast U.S. represent an untapped energy source with a technically feasible power production potential estimated at 19 GW in U.S. waters. The time average energy densities in this ocean current reach 3.3 kW/m2 off Florida’s east coast, several times greater than the most energy dense wind resource in the U.S. The on-campus research will focus on three technical challenges associated with harnessing this resource: resource assessment, system design and reliability and environmental impacts.(currently closed)
  • CMaT – Every summer, CMaT provides its Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program. The REU summer program funds 10-15 undergraduate students to work in CMaT labs at Georgia Tech (GT), University of Georgia (UGA), University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez (UPRM), and University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW).   • Iowa State University – The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Iowa State University hosts a summer Research Experience for Undergraduate (REU) students entitled Multiscale Sensing Actuation and Imaging (MoSAIc). The program will create novel research experiences for undergraduate students in the areas of design and manufacturing of micro/nanoscale sensors, actuators, and smart materials, as well as advanced imaging and diagnostic systems. The students will participate in cohort experiences such as short courses, joint seminars/meetings, workshops, tours of research facilities, and field trips. At the end of the program, REU students will participate in a joint poster symposium with students from other undergraduate summer research programs from across campus. Deadline: March 1, 2020
  • University Of California, San Diego –  The Jacobs school of Engineering (JSOE) at UC San Diego hosts a summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) summer program in Biomaterials. The objectives of the program are to train undergraduates in basic research through challenging biomaterial-related engineering projects performed with research mentors from engineering departments across JSOE. Research areas include tissue engineering and 3D printing, bio-inspired biomaterials, biomaterial-stem cell interaction, nanoparticles and drug delivery. Opens January 1. Closes February 15
  • University of Delaware – The Center for Biomechanical Engineering Research (CBER) at the University of Delaware offers a comprehensive Research Experience for Undergraduates who “Dare to BE FIRST” which will establish Biomechanical Engineering Foundations in Impactful Research, Science and Technology (BE FIRST). We specifically aim to improve the quantitative analysis capabilities of undergraduate students who have interests in biomedical research. Deadline: March 1 
  • SoNIC Summer Research WorkshopWorkshop: targeted to undergraduates and master’s students. The theme of the workshop centers around cloud computing (systems and networking) and data analytics, but students with background in CS, IS, EE, Math, and Physics are eligible to apply. The SoNIC Summer Research Workshop hosted by Cornell University and originally created in collaboration with Howard University is aimed at significantly increasing the number of underrepresented minorities pursuing and obtaining a PhD in computer science. It is designed to encourage undergraduate or masters students to pursue and achieve a PhD by experiencing computer science research firsthand using state-of-the-art methodologies and approaches.   • Summer School on Designing Technology for Social Impact: is targeted to rising seniors and graduate students at any stage. In this summer school, we will explore how technologies express their designers’ values, analyzes what values and voices are commonly embodied in technology, and looks at ways to design technologies to promote alternative perspectives and positive social impact. Students from a variety of disciplines are invited to attend, including – but not restricted to – informatics, computer science, science and technology studies, communication, and product design. Our goal is to build a strong cohort of up-and-coming researchers working in this area and connect them to relevant research and faculty. Deadline: February 7th, 2020
  • University of Minnesota MRSEC: will provide up to 20 full-time summer research positions to undergraduate students during the summer of 2020.  The UMN MRSEC REU program is an excellent way for students to build on prior experience gained through participation in the McNair program.   • University of Rochester: Human health research at the University of Rochester (UR) covers a wide range of engineering and science disciplines and a breadth of topics including accessibility, drug delivery and the development of therapeutic and novel medical devices.Students who are interested in understanding human health as a continuum of interrelated complex systems and questions will excel in this REU program. Deadline: January 27th 
  • National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates: How can a computer learn to read an ancient musical score? What can methods from signal processing and natural language analysis tell us about the history of popular music? Can a computer system teach a person to better use prosody (the musical pattern of speech) in order to become a more effective public speaker? These are some of the questions that students will investigate in our REU: Computational Methods for Understanding Music, Media, and Minds. They will explore an exciting, interdisciplinary research area that combines machine learning, audio engineering, music theory, and cognitive science. Each student will work in a team with another student and will be mentored by two or more faculty members drawn from Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Brain and Cognitive Science, the program in Digital Media Studies, and the Eastman School of Music. Deadline: Feb 9th
  • Nano-, Bio-, and Quantum Photonics: This program will engage participating students in the frontiers of photonics research in nanoscience, bioscience and quantum science while at the same time providing them with experiences to recognize the excellent career opportunities, both academic and industry based, available in photonics. The host department is the university’s world-renowned Institute of Optics, located in the Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. REU participants will benefit from the Institute’s Summer School, its Industrial Associates program, and its strong ties with the local Rochester photonics industry. Deadline: Feb 15th
  • The Center for Power Optimization of Electro-Thermal Systems (POETS): The Center for Power Optimization of Electro-Thermal Systems (POETS) offers a 10-week summer research program that provides undergraduate students with an opportunity to explore careers in research. Students gain an experience that will help strengthen their knowledge, skills and understanding of research methodologies as well as graduate school. The POETS REU program places students at one of its four universities: Howard University, Stanford University, University of Arkansas, and University of Illinois. While at a POETS institution, REU students work on a POETS research project under the guidance and mentorship of a faculty member and graduate student or post-doctoral mentor. In addition to research, students will participate in bi-weekly research seminars and professional development workshops, engage in a variety of social and professional events and communicate their research progress at multiple venues including POETS’ annual meeting in September. The goal of POETS REU program is to provide a unique summer experience that encourages students to pursue graduate studies in engineering. Deadline: Feb 17 
  • SURF – Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship: UC Irvine’s Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program offers undergraduate and master’s diversity students an opportunity to work closely with faculty mentors on research projects and provides an intense course of graduate preparation workshops. The program, which is designed for students who plan to pursue a Ph.D. or M.F.A. degree and enter academic careers, provides the tools needed to facilitate application, admission, and enrollment to graduate school. The SURF program is open to virtually all academic fields at UC Irvine. Qualified students with interest in pursuing their graduate program at UC Irvine are especially encouraged to apply. Deadline Feb 5
